Java Lounge LIVES!

It's Baaaaack! Java Lounge reopens its doors after a 2 year hiatus.
Call it a comeback.  Java Lounge has returned to life, after a shutting its doors a year or so ago. This latest incarnation of the Java Lounge comes in the form of second owner Jake Albus and his latest business partner, Toben Woodman.  Albus is feeling scrappy and hopeful. The hope largely stems from the buzz that swarmed around Java Lounge's re-opening late last month, and with it, the steady return of many old Java Lounge customers.  "This is great," states Albus, "I'm grateful to so many who remembered us. The fact that they come in after so long is really, really cool."

The Java Lounge makes great coffee for good people.
This off Broadway coffee shop was a Sactownie's cultural watering hole, serving customers a dose of street art + music, along with their lattes and mochas. In fact, Albus booked most of the bands, with emphasis on punk rock acts, for the all ages shows. "It served a need," he states,"There wasn't a lot of venues booking this music, so we did it," he says.  The shows were always packed.

All age shows were and are important to Albus, who along with his

On the Street: Ronda Lee

Name: Ronda Lee
Age: 21
Fashion Muse: Anne Tindall
Occupation: Student. Art Studies.

What drew my eye to this gingered beauty was the crafted use of color- the way her hair and her dress went together and the perfect pop of moss green contrasting the whole look in a delicious dripping of suede and fringe. She loves to dress up, preferring big, bright and bold colors and prints.

White Tie Optional

Ivan is a high school student with a penchant for spiffy dressing. He stood out in a crowd of jeans & t-shirts with his version of "white tie." When asked what his influences were, he said "Korean street style." Creative dress runs in his family; his big brother is designer Ceazar Cabreros who showed during the finale of Sac Fashion Week.

(Kristy) Green with Envy

Oh Kristy Green: I could write a love letter to your inimitable style. HOW for over a decade you have inspired the streets of Midtown with your down-to-earth warmth and unearthly beauty. How you can rock the fuck out of a vintage sweater with minimal effort, and exemplify the quirky character of Sacramento street style. But I will refrain. As I've waxed poetic here, here, here, here and here. Instead I will patiently wait for the next glimpse of your effortless and unforgettable grace. -Bella Q

Street Style: Second-hand Rose

100% thrifted.
Jade loves her secondhand thrift stores. Shown shopping the racks at Thrift Town.
First-rate street style comes from second-hand clothing.

I met Jade over the clothing racks at the El Camino location of Thrift Town. She was shopping with her grandmother.  We exchanged admiration over our outfits, and noted that both were 100% thrifted, A Sacramento native and former fashion student, Jade now studies Literature and Art in North Carolina, where she assures me, the thrift stores are pretty amazing. I get the feeling she REALLY likes to thrift shop.

When asked about what inspires her fashion, she says simply:" music." She plays it as she dresses and an outfit emerges. "You should have seen me in my Lady Gaga phase," she laughs. "If I'm listening to Katy Perry, it's something fun and colorful; if it's Slipknot, I'll be wearing dark colors, maybe wear something more androgynous. I definitely dress to express."

While no stranger to fast fashion stores, (she mentions Forever 21 as a place where she buys some of her accessories and tights," she says pointedly "if it's not from the Goodwill, it's probably something from my grandma's closet." It's a good thing her grandma is a snappy dresser.

Andy Keogh, R.I.P.

Andrew Allen Keogh passed away Monday morning, December 27th, due to complications of testicular cancer. He was 39 years old. He passed away peacefully, in his sleep, at home, close to his family and loved ones. Andrew is survived by his sister, Jenny, his brother Matthew, and his son Tyler.

Andy, as he was known to his friends, was known and loved by many, and his untimely exit is a great loss to us all. He was a familiar face to the tattoo crowd, working the early years of American Graffiti, in its hipster heydays. Andy Keogh was a singer, playing frontman in THE UPSETS, a local late punk-rock favorite of the mid-to-late '90's. Perhaps his oddest yet most memorable public connection is his decade long stint working the HABA department at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, where he achieved near celebrity status for his exemplary customer service and memorable punk-infused fashion sense.

Andy Keogh was known all around town, in a variety of social circles. He was friendly, easily liked and loved by many. An original mind possessing a sensitive soul, Andy was an artist, musician, and performer, as well as a proud father to his son Tyler. Andy had the touching ability to relate to almost anybody and a conversation with Keogh had him giving the speaker his undivided attention.  His distinctive dress, plentiful tattoos and and sincerity made Andy stand out in a crowd. He offered up his unique self to the world in his unforgettable take-it-or-leave it style. He will be sorely missed.

There will be a private funeral service to be held for family members and a memorial is being planned for his friends and family to gather and celebrate his life in accordance to his last wishes.

Street Style: The Artist's Way

I actually followed this cool-cat of woman a block before I worked enough courage to ask for her photo. We were both on bicycles; I was riding the opposite way.

She was game, but very nervous. Me too. I'm still getting used to walking up to strangers and asking to shoot them. I'm hoping it gets easier over time. What struck me was her mix of patterns: animal prints with plaid AND argyle. Genius!

Guessed she was an artist. Yep. Her name is Casey, and she and her boyfriend are artists. They live and have their art studio in a Midtown flat on P Street. She's into "monster art."  After  a few minutes of yakking, we both relaxed a bit. Took better pictures. My favorite: the close-up of her leopard coat, tiger print scarf and vintage bra.

After few more minutes of chatting we felt like old friends. One of these days I'm going to have to hunt down her art studio on P Street.                           -Bella Q

1 woman, 4 closets.

This girl, hands down, is one of the most stylish women you will ever lay eyes on. We worked together 6 years ago. Day after day, her coming into work would knock me off my feet. She is always polished from head to toe. She leaves nothing out and always compliments herself perfectly.

I feel like I have never seen the same outfit worn a second time.  I got my confirmation that Stacie might not wear something twice. Stepping into her Tahoe Park home, I was given a tour of her closets: CLOSETS! Count them: 4. Packed with hounds-tooth loveliness, berets, dresses, shoes, skirts, blouses, and who know what else might lie in the beautiful madness. I think I actually, was actually floating for a minute.  If I had my say, she would be Sacramento, San Francisco and New York street style!

Her dress was purchased at Prevues, and her pumps at YSJ vintage.  - Kerry Dolan

The self-proclaimed "Mayor of Midtown," presides over the Sacramento Midtown Bazaar every Saturday, where he sells vintage and hand-made jewelry. Mr. Steven Micheal Millington and his partner create original one-of-a-kind jewelry re-using a variety of objects including scrabble tiles, old jewelry bits, and vintage buttons. You can see examples of his work here.

No stranger to fun and fabulous, this warm hearted, honey-throated gentleman makes a perfect candidate for any party. When it comes to Sacramento style, this man's got our vote.
